ASL to English: Improving Your Work for the Next Job

Sunday, October 18, 2020

2 - 4 p.m

Zoom Webinar

“My goal for the workshop is to use the Demand-Control Schema (with permission from Robyn Dean) plus our experience to evaluate and mentor ourselves and others.”

Educational Outcomes

  • Participants will learn a practice system that will allow immediate improvement to their ASL to English work.  This structure for practice requires a current commitment to the work and develop possible controls (from liberal to conservative) to use for effective interpretation.
  • Vocal quality and effect will be privately dissected for each participant and specific training tools will be taught to meet their next step needs to improve actual vocal production.
  • Participants will also be able to list a variety of third person terminology, such as the work, the interpreter, etc. and reasons behind this philosophy.
  • Participants will be able to list and define the four categories (Environmental, Interpersonal, Paralinguistic and Intrapersonal) and give a minimum of two examples in each category.
  • Participants will be able to label the six layers of ASL to English work following the skeleton model taught in the workshop.
  • Participants will complete a six to ten step professional plan (form given) that lists specific steps for improvement over the next 3 to 6 months.

Before the workshop, participants will have completed a survey which requires:

  • Listening to and describing their own vocal qualities while doing ASL to English work while listing strengths and weaknesses of their ASL to English work.

The target audience for this workshop are working interpreters and interpreting students. The presentation will be conducted in Spoken English. Any request for reasonable accommodation should be made to [email protected] by Tuesday, October 6, 2020.
