How Long Have You Been a Member of RID?
I have been a certified member of RID since February of 2014.
Describe a favorite assignment or accomplishment you’ve achieved as an interpreter.
I love my current responsibility as an interpreter! In November of 2016, I accepted a position with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as an ASL Interpreter, and I am deployed to federally declared disasters all over the country to ensure effective communication access in all programs within FEMA – whether that means interpreting as a reasonable accommodation for a Deaf employee, interpreting for Deaf survivors, or providing technical assistance and training about effective communication and interpreting to federal, state, and local government entities. Beyond absolutely loving what I currently do, I am very proud of the role I play with Street Leverage as the Master Gear Head – even if I have not been available lately to serve in that role. FEMA takes all my time! Sorry, team. I am also honored to have accomplished being recognized by the supreme courts of Indiana and Ohio as a qualified legal interpreter.
What are your professional goals as an interpreter?
Never stop learning. Never forget my roots. Someday, when the timing is right, start an interpreting agency.
Tell Us Any Fun Facts About Yourself!
(Hobbies, favorite vacation spots, etc…)
I love to travel! – FEMA is a good fit for that. I love music! – I play guitar, and that’s what lead me to initially get involved with live event production which has opened up a tremendous amount of opportunity for me.
On May 20, 2017, I married the love of my life! Kristy Lestina.
