IRID Letter to Governor Rauner (re: Senate Resolution 5028)

The  Illinois Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (IRID) is writing this letter in response to the Senate Resolution (SR 0528), particularly the section where the Senators recommended the move of the Illinois Interpreter Licensure Law of 2007 from Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission to Illinois Finances and Professional Regulations (IDFPR).

Hi, my name is Teri Hedding. I’m the President for IRID and I’m proud to say I am the first Certified Deaf Interpreter for President of IRID.  Hi, I’m Mandy Grazian. I am IRID’s Vice President.  Hi, I’m Sara Lucas, the IRID Secretary.Hi, I’m Suzanne Salerno, the Treasurer. Also, there are four others on the Board. Member at Large 1: Cathy Silvern, 2: Mary Kocsis, 3: Olivia Heitz, and Student Representative: Mark McWilliams.

My first duty is this vlog. There will be vlogs sent out periodically keep you informed of what IRID has done, and will do, for all of you.

IRID and IAD Meet

On Wednesday, June 15, 2017, leadership of IRID and IAD met to discuss recent issues and tensions that had built between the two organizations.  It was a meeting that needed to take place in order for healing to occur.  Both sides learned more about one another, actions taken, and rationale behind decisions made.

It was a hard discussion to have.  It was uncomfortable at times.  However, everyone involved was committed to moving forward in mututal respect and for the betterment of our respective organizations and to leverage working together.

The Illinois Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (IRID) Executive Board would like to address concerns that have been raised as a result of an emailed letter that IRID sent to Senator Julie Morrison. When IRID emailed Senator Morrison, our intention was not to oppose SB752, but to ask for clarification and to understand its impact.  We now understand that the wording of the letter appeared as opposition, which was not our intent.

BEI Workshop

What a couple of action packed days were had at the BEI Preparation Workshop held at the Chicago Hearing Society on December 4 - 5, 2016.  

First of all - thank you to CHS for their generous donation of space to host this workshop.  Also a special shout out to Michelle Mendiola and Kim Eischen (CHS Staff) for coming in early on a weekend day to open the doors for us.

IRID Panel Event Attended by Students from Seven Different ITPs

Friday evening, October 14, 2016, around forty-five students and recent graduates from seven different interpreting training programs, some from as far as St. Louis, flocked to Columbia College Chicago for IRID’s ‘After Dark’ Panel Discussion.  The panel, which was composed of six panelists devoted to helping establish new interpreters in the field, answered student questions across a wide range of subjects from questions about life after graduation, handling ethical dilemmas, and even discussing mistakes they had made when they entered the field.

This year, IRID hosted our annual membership meeting along with professional development opportunities at Columbia College Chicago on October 15, 2016.  I can honestly say that the event was a huge success.  We had over 130 in attendance on Saturday and 40 in attendance Friday night for the Student / Entry to Practice Panel Discussion.  Thank you to the Panelists for a very stimulating question and answer session.

IRID is thrilled to announce the names of our members who were awarded scholarships at our recent membership meeting held at Columbai College on October 15, 2016.  We are pleased to be able to offer this benefit to our members.  IRID awards two Dan Levin Memorial Scholarships annually, provided that the necessary funds are available and there are eligible candidates, to members who wish to sit for a Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Performance Test.
